Vail
is located in Eagle County, 100 miles west of Denver on Interstate 70 and is just 35 miles from the Eagle County Regional Airport. Known worldwide as one of Colorado's top ski destinations, Vail Village is home to 4,500 permanent residents, plus another 5,000 part-time residents who own vacation properties in the area. Vail was founded as a ski resort in 1962 and incorporated as a town in 1966, and although it is best known as a winter resort, it actually offers many year-round activities for visitors. The town of Vail is modeled after a Bavarian Village where rugged mountain views serve as a backdrop for hundreds of diverse shops, art galleries, restaurants, luxurious accommodations and day spas. Vail Valley actually contains several premier ski areas including Vail, Beaver Creek, Copper Mountain, Breckenridge, Keystone and A-Basin - however, Vail is the largest single ski mountain in North America. The mountain contains 5,289 skiable acres, along with miles of recreational paths, the highest botanical gardens in the world and an outdoor amphitheater. Summertime activities in Vail include golf, hiking, biking, fishing, rafting and kayaking. Quaint, yet cosmopolitan, is the best way to describe Vail Village, where many of the residences feature ski-in, ski-out access, while others are just steps to the ski slopes. Breathtaking scenery, world class facilities and recreational activities makes Vail one of Colorado's top vacation destinations.

Northwestern Colorado is mostly mountainous, with some desert lands. Generally, the area has a highland mountain climate. Having the highest average elevation in the United States, combined with complex topography, results in dramatic climate changes from place to place. A general rule of thumb is the higher the elevation, the lower the temperature with an increase in precipitation. Northwest Colorado has a distinct four-season climate with cold, snowy winters and mild summers. In years when snow cover is heavy at high elevations, or when there is a sudden warming in the spring at high elevations, flooding may be a problem. Thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer. Hail is also common in the northwest part of the state. Autumn means crisp, dry days with lots of sunshine and cool nights.
