Avon
is located at the base of the Beaver Creek Ski Resort, adjacent to the main welcome gate. The town is often referred to as the commercial hub of the Eagle River Valley. Avon's permanent population is about 5,800 residents, but that number soars to around 10,000 during the busy ski and summer seasons. A charming town that is small enough to walk around and visit its' many shops and restaurants, Avon is both picturesque and convenient to all the area's famous attractions. You will also find free shuttle service to Beaver Creek Village in Avon. In 1996, the town of Avon opened a 40,000 square foot recreational center complete with state-of-the-art aquatics and exercise facilities. Nearby Beaver Creek offers world class skiing, fishing, hiking, biking, golf and tennis. Other attractions in town include the Avon Art Gallery, which showcases the incredible "Rite of Passage" bronze sculpture of five horses. A creation of artist Sandy Scott, each horse weighs about one ton, is one and six tenths times life size and is fifteen feet tall. The town of Avon also offers an eclectic mix of shopping opportunities and everything from formal dining to casual café style meals.

Northwestern Colorado is mostly mountainous, with some desert lands. Generally, the area has a highland mountain climate. Having the highest average elevation in the United States, combined with complex topography, results in dramatic climate changes from place to place. A general rule of thumb is the higher the elevation, the lower the temperature with an increase in precipitation. Northwest Colorado has a distinct four-season climate with cold, snowy winters and mild summers. In years when snow cover is heavy at high elevations, or when there is a sudden warming in the spring at high elevations, flooding may be a problem. Thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer. Hail is also common in the northwest part of the state. Autumn means crisp, dry days with lots of sunshine and cool nights.
