Steamboat-Springs
is nestled high in the mountains of Northwest Colorado's Yampa Valley, approximately 160 miles northwest of Denver. Known as "Ski Town USA," this beautiful little community has a skiing heritage that dates back to the early 1900s. It was originally a summertime resort, where travelers came for the natural hot springs and hunting and fishing opportunities. Today the town sits below one of the largest ski mountains in the country with nearly 3,000 skiable acres, 142 trails and 3,668 vertical feet. Summer activities in Steamboat Springs range from hiking, biking and horseback riding to kayaking and fly-fishing. Three championship golf courses are also located in the area. The town of Steamboat Springs offers over 70 restaurants, several art galleries, opera, ballet, a pioneers' museum and a renovated, historic train depot that houses a center for the arts. Several unique special events are held in Steamboat Springs each year. The Strings in the Mountains Music Festival began in 1988 as a way to bring world-class music to Steamboat Springs, and has grown to include musicians of all types who draw over 30,000 visitors each year. Other annual events include the Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup, the Cowboys Round Up Days/Fourth of July Celebration, Rainbow Weekend, which is a combination Hot Air Balloon Rodeo and Art in the Park, and the Annual Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival, a tradition since 1914.

Steamboat Springs Weather & Climate

North-central Colorado has a continental highland or mountain climate. The combination of high elevation and no large body of water nearby results in a cool, dry climate. The temperature is mild in summer and humidity is low, even in the midst of summer. The thin atmosphere of the higher elevations allows greater penetration of solar radiation. This results in pleasant daytime temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers at high elevations are often pictured in very light clothing, although surrounded by heavy snow. Colorado also receives abundant sunshine throughout the year (an average of 300 days.) The temperatures drops rapidly in the mountains, and freezing temperatures are possible in some places every month of the year.
