Steamboat-Lake
is a picture postcard lake and state park, nestled at the base of Hahn's Peak in northern Colorado. The 2,557-acre State Park is situated in the mountains of the western Routt National Forest, where the focal point of the park is the 1,053-acre Steamboat Lake. The elevation of the lake is about 8,000 feet and the facilities of the State Park lie mostly on the northwestern shore of the lake. Steamboat Lake is actually a reservoir, created in 1967-68, and is one of three lakes in Colorado to carry a gold medal designation. Three campgrounds are located in the area, and there are three boat ramps on the lake, along with a swimming area and a full-service marina. Placer Cove is a day-use area on the Eastern Shore of the lake that has an interpretive trail, boat ramp and lake access. Fishing and boating on Steamboat Lake are premier, and swimming, water skiing and jet skiing are also popular. Ice fishing is possible on the lake in winter and cross country skiing and snowmobiling are available on 60 miles of pristine trails. Steamboat Lake is quite beautiful, ringed by lots of pine trees and with the mountains rising majestically behind it. The park is open year round, but the campgrounds are closed in winter. There are lots of old mining towns located around the base of Hahn's Peak, and other activities in the area include horseback riding and hiking, and picnicking at the Placer Cove, Tombstone Nature Trailhead, Sage Flats and Dutch Hill Marina areas.

Steamboat Lake Weather & Climate

The extreme northwest corner of Colorado has a rugged topography, which causes large variations in climate within short distances. At mountain summits, temperatures remain low, averaging less than 32 degrees F. Snow-covered mountain peaks have frigid nighttime temps, occasionally as low as 50 degrees F. below zero. Summer in this region is mild and refreshing. The average temperature in summer is around 60 degrees F. Precipitation west of the Continental Divide is more evenly distributed throughout the year than in the eastern plains. For most of western Colorado, winter is the wettest season and June is the driest month. When there is sudden warming in the spring at the higher elevations, snow melt may cause extensive flooding.
