Oak-Creek
is a former coal mining town located in Routt County, northwestern Colorado. The population is approximately 850 residents. Located near the city of Steamboat Spring, Oak Creek is a quiet community with tree-lined streets and a large public park off Main Street. A few stores, restaurants and a motel make up the rest of the commercial district. Oak Creek is mostly known for being home to Stagecoach State Park, a 780-acre recreational reservoir. It includes a full-service marina, and offers boating and fishing. A popular hiking trail is on the south shore of the lake, and the Wetlands Trail is located at the inlet. Oak Creek is also near Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests. From mountain ranges to grasslands and crystal clear streams, the national forests and national grassland provide almost three million scenic acres of recreational opportunities for visitors. Some of the things to do include hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding, fishing, hunting, sightseeing, photography and skiing. Oak Creek is small and peaceful, but not the place to come for nightlife or shopping. For more culture, visit nearby Steamboat Springs, which offers over 70 restaurants, art galleries, opera, ballet, a pioneers' museum and a renovated, historic train depot that houses a center for the arts. Several unique special events and festivals are also held in Steamboat Springs each year.

North-central Colorado has a continental highland or mountain climate. The combination of high elevation and no large body of water nearby results in a cool, dry climate. The temperature is mild in summer and humidity is low, even in the midst of summer. The thin atmosphere of the higher elevations allows greater penetration of solar radiation. This results in pleasant daytime temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers at high elevations are often pictured in very light clothing, although surrounded by heavy snow. Colorado also receives abundant sunshine throughout the year (an average of 300 days.) The temperatures drops rapidly in the mountains, and freezing temperatures are possible in some places every month of the year.
