Yampa-Valley
is an area of northwestern Colorado that encompasses both Routt and Moffat Counties. It includes the cities of Steamboat Springs, Oak Creek, Craig, Hayden, Milner, as well as the Stagecoach Recreational Area, Steamboat Lake and Yampa River State Park. From skiing, snowboarding and ice hockey in the winter, to camping, hiking, fishing and golf in the summer, Yampa Valley has it all. The Yampa River State Park lies along the Yampa River in the valley. It features 13 river access points along 134 miles for boaters along the Yampa River. Miles of hiking trails allow visitors to explore the river canyons and rock formations. A campground is adjacent to the visitors center in the state park. This campground has 50 campsites including 35 RV electric sites, ten tent sites, and five sites for group camping. The park also has more primitive campsites near many of the river access points. The Yampa Valley is also known as the "Elk Hunting Capital of the World," with one of the largest elk herds found in North America. The Yampa Valley also offers a rich arts scene and cultural opportunities. For example, Routt County is home to a number of artists and art galleries, as well as dance, theatre and music performances. Other attractions in Yampa Valley include the Dinosaur National Monument and Elkhead Reservoir. Special events include Craig's Grande Olde West Days Festival, Strings in the Mountains Music Festival, the Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup and the Annual Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival.

Yampa Valley Weather & Climate

The extreme northwest corner of Colorado has a rugged topography, which causes large variations in climate within short distances. At mountain summits, temperatures remain low, averaging less than 32 degrees F. Snow-covered mountain peaks have frigid nighttime temps, occasionally as low as 50 degrees F. below zero. Summer in this region is mild and refreshing. The average temperature in summer is around 60 degrees F. Precipitation west of the Continental Divide is more evenly distributed throughout the year than in the eastern plains. For most of western Colorado, winter is the wettest season and June is the driest month. When there is sudden warming in the spring at the higher elevations, snow melt may cause extensive flooding.
