Hahns-Peak
is the name of a popular rock-climbing mountain and also a historical community located in northwest Colorado. Originally a boom town and the county seat, the "ghost town" of Hahns Peak is near the town of Steamboat Springs and Steamboat Lake. It consists of a residential historical district that was founded in 1865 as a gold mining camp. Self-guided tours are available, supported by the Hahns Peak Area Historical Society. Hahns Peak (the mountain) is located in the Elkhead Mountains, which is one of the few mountain ranges in the United States to run east-west, rather than north-south. Hahns Peak is well-known by rock climbers. It's famous for its' perfectly shaped cone laccolith. It's a fairly easy mountain to climb in the summertime, but more challenging in the wintertime. Please be prepared if climbing Hahns Peak, because, although it's lower than many other peaks in Colorado, it consistently has some of the greatest snowfall depths in the state. Also, as the peak stands alone, it is often the site of lightening strikes (and the forest service has placed a warning sign on the summit.) A fire-lookout tower is located on Hahns Peak that was originally constructed in 1912 and is now a state historical site. The tower has been reconstructed more than once, due to lightening strikes. Other activities in the area include hiking, picnicking, camping and wildlife viewing.

The extreme northwest corner of Colorado has a rugged topography, which causes large variations in climate within short distances. At mountain summits, temperatures remain low, averaging less than 32 degrees F. Snow-covered mountain peaks have frigid nighttime temps, occasionally as low as 50 degrees F. below zero. Summer in this region is mild and refreshing. The average temperature in summer is around 60 degrees F. Precipitation west of the Continental Divide is more evenly distributed throughout the year than in the eastern plains. For most of western Colorado, winter is the wettest season and June is the driest month. When there is sudden warming in the spring at the higher elevations, snow melt may cause extensive flooding.
