Craig
is a Home Rule Municipality located in the northwest corner of Colorado. In Colorado, a Home Rule Municipality has a self-governing charter and the right to declare itself either a town or city. As of the 2010 census, the population of the community was 9,464. Craig is called the "Elk Hunting Capital of the World," with one of the largest herds of elk found in North America. People travel from all over the world to hunt here, and Craig depends heavily on the resulting tourism for their economy. As part of Moffat County, Craig offers lots of recreational opportunities. Among the things to do: hiking, biking, horseback riding, rafting, fishing, boating, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Hiking trails abound in the backcountry, often leading to spectacular vistas and opportunities to see exciting wildlife. Two-thirds of the Dinosaur National Monument, often called "the little Grand Canyon," is located in Moffat County and is a great place to hike or camp. Be sure to check the weather forecast before heading out for a hike in the mountains as conditions can change rapidly in the high mountain prairies. Other attractions near Craig include Elkhead Reservoir and Brown's Park. The community is also host to the annual Grande Olde West Days festival.

Craig Weather & Climate
The extreme northwest corner of Colorado has a rugged topography, which causes large variations in climate within short distances. At mountain summits, temperatures remain low, averaging less than 32 degrees F. Snow-covered mountain peaks have frigid nighttime temps, occasionally as low as 50 degrees F. below zero. Summer in this region is mild and refreshing. The average temperature in summer is around 60 degrees F. Precipitation west of the Continental Divide is more evenly distributed throughout the year than in the eastern plains. For most of western Colorado, winter is the wettest season and June is the driest month. When there is sudden warming in the spring at the higher elevations, snow melt may cause extensive flooding.
