Leadville
is located 24 miles from Copper Mountain and 110 miles west of Denver. It has the distinction of being the highest incorporated city in the world at 10,430 feet - often called "The Two Mile High City," or "Cloud City. With its' scenic mountain backdrop in an area filled with pristine streams and alpine lakes, Leadville has also been called "Colorado's Well-kept Secret." That isn't likely to be true for long, however, after "Men's Journal" named the town one of the nation's top "20 Dream Towns in America," and "Runner's World" proclaimed it "Trailway to Heaven." The town is situated along the Top of the Rockies Scenic and Historic Byway, and contains 70 square blocks of Victorian architecture and 20 square miles of historic mining district. It offers antique and gift shops, cozy little coffeehouses and elegant Victorian bed and breakfasts. In summer, enjoy whitewater rafting, hiking, biking, fishing, mountain climbing or exploring old ghost towns in the area. In winter, Leadville has easy access to some of the country's best skiing (Copper Mountain, Breckenridge, Keystone, Vail and Beaver Creek.) The other main attraction in town is the Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad, which takes passengers along the old Denver, South Park & Colorado & Southern lines to the Continental Divide. The journey provides breathtaking panoramas across the Arkansas River Valley with humorous narratives about Leadville's colorful past.

Leadville Weather & Climate

Central Colorado has a more complex climate than most states in the United States. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather depending on the topography of the area. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild to warm, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
