Alma
is located in Park County on State Highway 9, north of the town of Fairplay and south of Hoosier Pass. This village of less than 200 residents boasts having the highest elevation of any incorporated town in the U.S. (at 10,578 feet above sea level.) The town of Alma today actually lies downstream from the original town, which was called Buckskin Joe during its' mining heyday. At one time, the mines in this area produced over $1,500,000 annually, but eventually the mines became unproductive and a smallpox epidemic wiped out most of the town's residents. Many consider Alma a "ghost town," but the Sweet Home Mine still produces world-class specimens of rhodochrosite, a mineral known for its lovely pink rose color. Alma welcomes tourists who come to visit the town's spooky cemetery and Kite Lake, which lies at a crisp 12,400 feet above sea level. Outdoor recreational activities in the area include world-class rock climbing and mountain biking, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, river rafting, skiing, snowmobiling and sledding.

Central Colorado has a more complex climate than most states in the United States. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather depending on the topography of the area. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild to warm, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
