Fairplay
is located in central Colorado at an elevation of 9,896 feet, about 85 miles southwest of Denver and 85 miles west-northwest of Colorado Springs. The town lies within South Park, which is a broad valley that covers over 900 square miles and is surrounded by the Mosquito and Park Mountain Ranges. The scenic portion of Highway 285, which runs through the Pike National Forest between Poncha Springs and Morrison passes through the town of Fairplay. The closest commercial airports are Aspen, Denver International and Colorado Springs. The community of Fairplay was named by gold prospectors who settled here in 1859 when they were driven from nearby Tarryall by miners who had staked more claims than they could work. In Fair Play every man would have an equal chance to stake a claim - thus the name of the town was born. History buffs of the old west and gold mining towns will enjoy visiting the South Park City Museum in Fairplay. Created in 1959, the museum represents a Colorado mining town between the years 1870 and 1900, and is open from May through October. Fairplay also offers a Walking Tour of its' historic downtown area. Dozens of pristine lakes and streams in the area offer great fishing and boating. Hiking, biking, mountain and ice climbing, skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing are also available in the Fairplay area.

Fairplay Weather & Climate

Central Colorado has a more complex climate than most states in the United States. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather depending on the topography of the area. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild to warm, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
