Hot-Sulphur-Springs
is a small town located in north-central Colorado, home to a popular natural hot springs resort and spa. The permanent population of the town is less than 1,000. Sitting at an elevation of 7,680 feet, the area that is now Hot Sulphur Springs was originally a summer campground for the Ute Indians. The town was first established in 1860 and called Saratoga West, or sometimes Warm Springs. The name was changed after William Newton Byers bought the town site and created the natural mineral springs resort, making it one of the nation's oldest such sites. The spa-resort is still the town's main attraction and offers 22 different pools and private baths of varying heat, along with various other treatments. Over 80 acres are available for hiking, fishing, rafting the Colorado River, picnicking or just wandering to enjoy the scenery. Nearby, you'll find some of the best alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and golfing in the state. Sailing and boating are available less than 30-minutes away at Grand Lake, Shadow Mountain Lake and Lake Granby. History buffs will also enjoy visiting the Pioneer Village Museum in the village of Hot Sulphur Springs. This quaint mountain town is about one hour and 45-minutes northwest of Denver and only 30-minutes west of the Winter Park Ski Area.

North-central Colorado has a continental highland or mountain climate. The combination of high elevation and no large body of water nearby results in a cool, dry climate. The temperature is mild in summer and humidity is low, even in the midst of summer. The thin atmosphere of the higher elevations allows greater penetration of solar radiation. This results in pleasant daytime temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers at high elevations are often pictured in very light clothing, although surrounded by heavy snow. Colorado also receives abundant sunshine throughout the year (an average of 300 days.) The temperatures drops rapidly in the mountains, and freezing temperatures are possible in some places every month of the year.
