Granby
is located in the mountains of Grand County, just 85 miles from Denver. The town's motto is "The Real West," - "the west of cowboys, rodeos, and cookouts, bright stars and unpolluted skies, mountains, rivers, sprawling ranchland and untamed wildlife." This sleepy mountain town was founded in 1905 and has become one of the "in" places for tourists due to its' great climate and proximity to several outdoor recreational areas. At an elevation of 7,935 feet above sea level, Granby is just four miles to the Silver Creek Ski Area, six miles to Lake Granby, ten miles to Grand Lake and just 17 miles to the entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park. Plus, it's only 22 miles to the Winter Park and Mary Jane Ski Areas. This gives visitors easy access to hiking, mountain biking, boating and rafting, fly fishing and lake fishing, skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, dog sledding - the list goes on and on. Just north of Granby is the Colorado State Forest State Park, with 50 miles of marked hiking trails, 112 miles of mountain bike and horseback trails and 75 miles of four-wheel driving trails. Shopping and dining are also terrific in Granby, where you can order everything from authentic German food to American hamburgers. Just west of town is Hot Sulphur Springs, the oldest settlement in the valley, noted for its relaxing hot mineral baths.

North-central Colorado has a continental highland or mountain climate. The combination of high elevation and no large body of water nearby results in a cool, dry climate. The temperature is mild in summer and humidity is low, even in the midst of summer. The thin atmosphere of the higher elevations allows greater penetration of solar radiation. This results in pleasant daytime temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers at high elevations are often pictured in very light clothing, although surrounded by heavy snow. Colorado also receives abundant sunshine throughout the year (an average of 300 days.) The temperatures drops rapidly in the mountains, and freezing temperatures are possible in some places every month of the year.
