Green-Mountain-Reservoir
lies along Colorado Highway 9, approximately twelve miles southeast of Kremmling. At 8000 feet above sea level and nestled between two spectacular mountain ranges, the Gore and the Williams Peak Ranges, the Green Mountain Reservoir area is one of Colorados best kept secrets. It's only a short 30 to 40 minute drive to the Keystone, Breckenridge, Arapahoe Basin, Loveland and Copper Mountain ski resorts, and the entire area offers abundant outdoor recreation in a tranquil setting different from the big ski resorts nearby. The tiny community of Heeney, established in the late 1930s, lies on the shore of Green Mountain Reservoir. This sleepy little lakeside town comes to life the second weekend in June for the Heeney Tick Festival, which features a parade, crowning of a king & queen, lots of food, beer, games, auction and live music. There is not a lot of commercial development around the Green Mountain Reservoir but it offers lots of hiking, fishing, hunting, boating, jet skiing, water-skiing, ice fishing, 4 wheel drive roads, camping and spectacular scenery. There is a small marina with boat rentals in the town of Heeney and a small store with food items, fishing supplies, etc. Other nearby attractions include the Cataract Lake area, Eagles Nest Wilderness area and the Blue River area.

Green Mountain Reservoir Weather & Climate

North-central Colorado has a continental highland or mountain climate. The combination of high elevation and no large body of water nearby results in a cool, dry climate. The temperature is mild in summer and humidity is low, even in the midst of summer. The thin atmosphere of the higher elevations allows greater penetration of solar radiation. This results in pleasant daytime temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers at high elevations are often pictured in very light clothing, although surrounded by heavy snow. Colorado also receives abundant sunshine throughout the year (an average of 300 days.) The temperatures drops rapidly in the mountains, and freezing temperatures are possible in some places every month of the year.
