Shadow-Mountain-Lake
is located in the Arapaho National Recreation Area in north-central Colorado. Together with Grand Lake, they form one continuous body of water - the largest natural lake in the state. Shadow Mountain Lake and Grand Lake are separated by gates. What a beautiful sight - the crystal clear lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains and deep evergreen forests. One can do nothing but sit lakeside and be overwhelmed by the natural beauty, but - that's not to say there isn't a lot to do at Shadow Mountain Lake. Activities include boating, fishing, camping, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and picnicking. There are two boat-launch ramps at the lake, which is stocked with brown and rainbow trout and salmon. Trail Ridge Marina is conveniently located on U.S. Highway 34 near the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. If you get in the mood for a little more culture, you can travel up the lake to the city of Grand Lake, where you can tie your boat to the town pier while you do some shopping or dining. Shadow Mountain Lake also has close proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park and the world-class skiing at Winter Park and Silver Creek. Shadow Mountain Lake's facilities are closed in winter due to snow and ice conditions, but at Winter Park you can enjoy skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, ice skating or sleigh rides.

North-central Colorado has a semi-arid, continental climate with over 300 days of sunshine per year. It's a common misconception that due to its close proximity to the high elevations, that north-central Colorado has harsh winters. This is not entirely true. While there may be occasional bitter temperatures, storms do not last long. Periods of snow alternate with mild periods. Oftentimes, the snow quickly melts during the day. The hottest months are July and August with an average high temperature of 74 degrees. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of 30 degrees. This region has four distinct seasons, and being along the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains means weather patterns are subject to rapid, volatile, yet brief changes.
