Allenspark
is located 17 miles northeast of Boulder at an elevation of 8,521 feet. This tiny town of less than 500 residents was, at one time, the number one hot spot for ski jumping. Between the years 1922 and 1940, skiers came from all over the country for tournaments held at Allenspark. Today, cross-country skiers come here to travel the Ski Road to the Old Ski Area Trail. The town is also situated along scenic Highway 7 that goes into Estes Park and along the 55-mile Peak-to-Peak Scenic Byway. This historic Byway passes through some of Colorado's most beautiful vacation spots, including Rocky Mountain National Park and the Black Hawk/Central City gambling district. It also takes you to a few of Colorado's ghost towns, such as Caribou and Nederland. Established in 1918, the Peak-to-Peak Byway is Colorado's oldest scenic byway. Fall is a particularly beautiful time to visit because the area is filled with golden aspen trees and it's elk mating season, so the chances of spotting one of these fascinating creatures is high. Outdoor recreational activities in the Allenspark region include hiking, rock climbing, river rafting, horseback riding, fishing and bird watching, and even panning for gold. For fine dining, museums, theater and nightlife, the city of Boulder is just a short drive from Allenspark.

North-central Colorado has a semi-arid, continental climate with over 300 days of sunshine per year. It's a common misconception that due to its close proximity to the high elevations, that north-central Colorado has harsh winters. This is not entirely true. While there may be occasional bitter temperatures, storms do not last long. Periods of snow alternate with mild periods. Oftentimes, the snow quickly melts during the day. The hottest months are July and August with an average high temperature of 74 degrees. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of 30 degrees. This region has four distinct seasons, and being along the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains means weather patterns are subject to rapid, volatile, yet brief changes.
