Winter-Park
is located in Grand County (often referred to as the Fraser Valley) at an elevation of 9,000 feet above sea level, about 67 miles northwest of Denver. The valley is surrounded by the Arapaho National Forest and the Indian Peaks, Byers Peak and Vasquez Wilderness Areas. The town of Winter Park has a year round population of around 720 people and is 7.5 square miles in size, including the base village of Winter Park Resort. Nearby Fraser has a population of 732 and is the more service-oriented of the two towns. Logging was the main industry in this area in the early 20th century, and with it, came the railroad, which also helped the ski industry to flourish. The first ski hills in Grand County were built in Hot Sulphur Springs in 1911, and the Winter Park Ski Area opened in 1940. Tourism is the main industry today in the Fraser Valley. Mary Jane Mountain/Winter Park has received a "#1 ranking for bumps three years in a row by Skiing Magazine." However, if you don't ski, there are plenty of other activities in the Winter Park area, including snowmobiling, dog sled riding, snowshoeing, shopping, top rate spas and hot springs and fine dining. In summer, enjoy hiking or mountain biking in the high country, horseback riding, rafting, hot air ballooning - even riding on board a horse-drawn wagon or stagecoach for a feel of the real Old West. Art fairs, music festivals, races, half-pipe competitions and fireworks are all just a part of the many events you'll find in the Winter Park/Fraser Valley area.

North-central Colorado has a continental highland or mountain climate. The combination of high elevation and no large body of water nearby results in a cool, dry climate. The temperature is mild in summer and humidity is low, even in the midst of summer. The thin atmosphere of the higher elevations allows greater penetration of solar radiation. This results in pleasant daytime temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers at high elevations are often pictured in very light clothing, although surrounded by heavy snow. Colorado also receives abundant sunshine throughout the year (an average of 300 days.) The temperatures drops rapidly in the mountains, and freezing temperatures are possible in some places every month of the year.
