Poudre-River-Canyon , also called Cache la Poudre River, is a designated Wild and Scenic River due to its' outstanding recreational and scenic features. The Poudre River Canyon is a narrow verdant canyon approximately 40 miles long on the upper Cache la Poudre River. The canyon is a glacier formed valley through the foothills of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains northwest of Fort Collins. Except for a small portion of the canyon north of Rocky Mountain National Park, the canyon runs parallel to Colorado State Highway 14, the principal road through the canyon. All of the communities in the canyon are unincorporated, with some resort cabin communities found here and there along the canyon downstream from Rustic, which at one time was a bustling summer resort. The area is relatively isolated, compared to canyons further south along the Colorado Front Range, giving it a very peaceful, tranquil atmosphere. Most commercial establishments in the area are found in Poudre Park, which caters to the modest number of tourists that arrive during fishing and whitewater rafting season. The nearby National Forest has numerous trails that serve as hiking trails in the summer and cross-country trails in the winter. Trout is the most popular species of fish in the river and the U.S. Forest Service maintains a series of picnic areas and campgrounds along the Poudre River Canyon.

Poudre River Canyon Weather & Climate

North-central Colorado has a semi-arid, continental climate with cold, dry winters and hot, wet summers. On average, this area receives just over 17 inches of rain per year. Snowfall averages 60 inches per year, but many times the snow quickly melts during the daylight hours. Temperatures in winter are cold, but usually not bitterly cold. As with most of Colorado, the climate is termed as highland or mountain climate. Humidity is normally quite low, which means it feels cool, even on hot days. Warm, moist air from the south most frequently moves into the area during spring, causing thunderstorms. Frequent showers and thunderstorms continue well into summer. There may also be hot, dry spells in summer.
