Penrose
, population approximately 4,600, is "The Gateway to Fremont County," which is located 30 miles south of Colorado Springs and 24 miles west of Pueblo. It is situated at the crossroads of Highways 50 and 115. Located in "the banana belt of Colorado," the city of Penrose enjoys an average of 350 days of sunshine per year. Several interesting attractions are located near Penrose, including the World's Largest Rocking Chair. Located at Doxey's Apple Shed, just north of town, the rocking chair is 21 feet high, 14 feet wide and weighs 9,100 pounds (be sure to bring your camera!) Penrose is located along the Arkansas River, which is one of the country's premier recreational playgrounds and offers fishing, white water rafting, kayaking, hiking, camping and mountain biking. The Brush Hollow Reservoir and State Wildlife Area is just two miles north of town and Lake Pueblo State Park is 25 miles east of Penrose. Both offer fishing and picnicking, and Lake Pueblo also offers swimming, boating, water skiing and camping. Just nineteen miles west of Penrose, off Highway 50, is the Royal Gorge Bride, the world's highest suspension bridge. Completed in 1929, this bridge will thrill you with its' spectacular views of the blue-green Arkansas River over a thousand feet below. Visitors can walk, drive or ride the trolley across the quarter-mile long bridge.

Central Colorado , in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, has a very complex climate. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, and the higher elevations are mountain-alpine climate. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild to warm, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
