Colorado-Springs
is situated at the foot of one of the most famous U.S. landmarks, Pikes Peak, upon whose summit author Katharine Lee Bates was inspired to write "America the Beautiful." Thousands of tourists travel to the peak each year, where they can drive their cars, ride a cog railway or hike to its 14,000-foot summit. The largest city in El Paso County, Colorado Springs' estimated population of 320,000 makes up nearly three-quarters of the population for the whole county. The city began in 1871 when General William Jackson Palmer first saw the Pikes Peak region and recognized that it was a location that could attract his wealthy European and East Coast friends. Known as "Little London" in its' early days, Colorado Springs soon became a cultural center with opera, fine hotels and restaurants. In the 1890s, gold was discovered in nearby Cripple Creek and Colorado Springs soon became a thriving financial center. With its' scenic beauty, cultural and recreational opportunities, Colorado Springs has now become a popular tourist spot as well. The city thrives on culture and offers its own symphony and performing arts center, several museums, the Colorado Springs Arts Center and the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum. The city boasts one of the nations three U.S. Olympic Training Centers, as well as the U.S. Air Force Academy. Colorado Springs is also considered home to one of the country's most spectacular parks, the Garden of the Gods, located in the foothills of Pikes Peak.

Colorado Springs Weather & Climate

Central Colorado has a more complex climate than most states in the United States. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
