Manitou-Springs
is located just four miles west of Colorado Springs and approximately 65 miles south of Denver. The name "Manitou" is a Native American word for "spirit," and long before white men discovered it, the Ute and Cheyenne considered this area to be sacred. Nine mineral springs are found throughout the town that are fed by the snows of Pikes Peak, and the town is home to several other unique attractions, as well. The Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway takes passengers to the top of Pikes Peak at an elevation of 14,110 feet above sea level. Miramont Castle and the Cliff Dwellings Museum takes you back in time, and the Cave of the Winds lets you descend into the magnificently colored depths below the surface of the earth. Manitou Springs is also near the Garden of the Gods, one of Colorado's most fascinating geological attractions. Other nearby attractions include the Ghost Town Museum, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center and the Colorado Wolf & Wildlife Center. Manitou Springs also has a thriving arts community with many galleries and shops located in the downtown area. Manitou Springs began attracting prominent painters, photographers, crafts folks and writers as early as the mid-1800s. Today, the town is home to the Craftwood Arts & Crafts Studio founded in 1906, the Commonwheel Artists Cooperative founded in 1974, the Business of Art Center and the Manitou Art Theater.

Manitou Springs Weather & Climate

Central Colorado has a more complex climate than most states in the United States. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
