Pikes-Peak is a mountain located in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in central Colorado. It's within the Pike National Forest, 10 miles west of the city of Colorado Springs. Pikes Peak is the easternmost of Colorado's "fourteeners," which are mountains within the state that rise above 14,000 feet. At 14,115 feet, Pikes Peak is a designated National Historic Landmark. Pikes Peak is not the highest mountain in Colorado, but it's one of the most well-known. This is due, in part, to the song "America the Beautiful." In 1893, while in Colorado Springs to teach a summer session at Colorado Collage, Professor Katharine Lee Bates took a trip by carriage to the summit of Pikes Peak. She was so moved by the experience, she wrote a poem that became the opening lines of "America the Beautiful." Later she said, "I wrote the entire song on my return that evening to Colorado Springs." Today, one of the best ways to experience the mountain is to take the Cog Railway to the summit. On the way up, the train follows a cascading stream through dense forest and boulder fields. You'll pass the old settlement of Ruston Park and what is known as "Hell Gate," a natural gateway in the mountains. As you climb above the timberline, the views become even more spectacular. To the east stretch the Great Plains, to the south, the Sangre de Christo Range, and to the southwest lies the Collegiate Range. Pikes Peak is also home to one of the largest herds of Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep in the state. On the summit, you're allowed 30-40 minutes before the return trip back down. Any longer, and most people begin to feel the effects of high altitude, such as slight nausea and headache. It's an experience of a lifetime - and one of Colorado's most visited tourist attractions.

Pikes Peak Weather & Climate

Central Colorado has a more complex climate than most states in the United States. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
