Cripple-Creek is an old west mining town situated at 9,494 feet above sea level, about 24 miles southwest of Colorado Springs. In it's day, it was considered the most fabulous gold mining camp in Colorado. Today, visitors come for another kind of riches - gambling. Cripple Creek is one several towns allowed to offer limited-stakes gambling. There's lots of other attractions in town, too, including a fun-filled live summer theater that exaggerates the wild history of the Cripple Creek, complete with fake gun fights. In fact, celebrations take place all summer long with auto races, chili cook-offs, donkey races, art shows, rodeos, special casino events and more. In autumn, there's the spectacular fall aspen tours. Places to visit in Cripple Creek include the Mollie Kathleen Mine, the Cripple Creek & Victor Railroad, the Butte Opera House and the Cripple Creek Museum. There are several backcountry scenic byways in the area, including the Gold Belt Tour National Back Country Byway. Recreational opportunities near Cripple Creek include skiing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, rock climbing, rafting, fishing and golf.

Cripple Creek Weather & Climate

Central Colorado has a more complex climate than most states in the United States. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
