Lyons
is a small town located twenty miles east of Rocky Mountain National Park. Beautiful red cliffs border this charming town that offers a variety of outdoor activities and amenities for tourists. During winter, there is ice skating in Meadow Park and cross country skiing and snowshoeing at Peaceful Valley or Camp Duck. Summer means floating down the St. Vrain River on an inner tube - an activity that has been a favorite for kids and adults alike in Lyons for years. There are several recreational areas near Lyons, including Button Rock Preserve, which is a peaceful river valley about seven miles from town that offers scenic views and excellent fishing. Hall Ranch is only one mile west of Lyons and provides over 12 miles of multi-use trails and consists of 3,206 acres of backcountry. A group shelter, which can accommodate up to 50 people, is available for use on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Lion Gulch Trail offers moderate hiking that takes you through the Roosevelt National Forest and eventually leads to Homestead Meadows, where eight historical homesteads still stand. This trail is open to hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders. Other attractions near Lyons include Rabbit Mountain, Hall Ranch and Hail Valley Ranch. Lyons also offers shopping and restaurants that range from casual to elegant. Lodging is everything from motels to historic cabins, cottages and bed and breakfast inns.

North-central Colorado has a semi-arid, continental climate with over 300 days of sunshine per year. It's a common misconception that due to its close proximity to the high elevations, that north-central Colorado has harsh winters. This is not entirely true. While there may be occasional bitter temperatures, storms do not last long. Periods of snow alternate with mild periods. Oftentimes, the snow quickly melts during the day. The hottest months are July and August with an average high temperature of 74 degrees. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of 30 degrees. This region has four distinct seasons, and being along the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains means weather patterns are subject to rapid, volatile, yet brief changes.
