Durango is located in the mountainous southwest region of Colorado at an elevation of 6,500 feet. This town of 46,000 residents was incorporated in 1881 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad to serve the San Juan mining district, and it quickly grew as the railroad offered jobs and business opportunities. Today Durango draws big city dwellers that are looking for a small town atmosphere in a beautiful natural setting. The name "Durango" means, "water town," and it was so named because the scenic Animas River flows right through the community. The town has three prominent historic districts - Main Avenue Historic District, East Third Avenue Historic Residential District and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad right-of-way between Durango and Silverton. Nearby Mesa Verde National Park and Vallecito Lake offer myriad recreational opportunities like boating, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, backpacking and skiing, and you can fish in the Animas or play golf on one of the many golf courses in the area. Durango is probably most well known, however, for the Durango & Silverton Railroad, on which you can take a ride back in time behind a historic steam powered locomotive. The train winds through 46 miles of the San Juan National Forest to the old mining town of Silverton, which is a National Historic Landmark. Historic downtown Durango is an attraction in itself with its' old storefronts, art galleries, museums, award winning restaurants and cafes.

Durango Weather & Climate

The extreme southwest corner of the state has a moderate, four-season climate. Weather variations occur depending on elevation, and this area ranges from 14,000-foot mountain peaks to desert valley floors and alpine forests. Most of this region enjoys mild temperatures and 300 days of sunshine year-round. The region averages 71 inches of snow, but accumulations don't last long. Spring gradually warms up and showers are common. Summer temperatures seldom climb above the upper 80's and humidity levels are comfortable. Occasionally, flooding is a problem with the rivers and reservoirs being fed by melting snow in the mountains. Autumn is dry and cool, creating wonderful fall colors.
