Navajo-Lake is located in Archuleta County in southern Colorado. The biggest portion of the lake, however, lies in San Juan County, northwestern New Mexico. The reservoir is part of the Colorado River Storage Project, which stores and releases water that's used locally for irrigation. Navajo Lake is nestled in a beautiful area of the pinon and cedar-covered rim-rock country of southern Colorado. The lake covers 15,600 acres, is 35 miles long and has over 150 miles of public shoreline. It lies at an elevation of 6,085 feet. Navajo Lake is known for its' boating and fishing for northern pike, brown and rainbow trout, kokanee salmon, large and smallmouth bass, catfish, sunfish and crappie. Other activities to enjoy at the lake include sailing, scuba diving, hiking, picnicking, birding and camping. Sledding and snowshoeing are available, weather permitting. The Navajo Lake State Park features over 200 campsites, a marina and two boat ramps. It's also a great place for wildlife enthusiasts, perfect year round for birding and wildlife viewing. Bald Eagles generally arrive in the area in early December and winter here. They're often spotted in the trees overlooking the lake where they hunt for prey. Canadian Geese also winter near the lake. Deer wander the grounds looking for berries and other vegetation to eat, and are often seen by visitors. Full-service campsites at Navajo Lake are open year-round. Pontoon boat rentals are available from the marina located on the southern end of the lake.

Navajo Lake Weather & Climate

Northwestern Colorado is mostly mountainous, with some desert lands. Generally, the climate can be described as highland and alpine mountain. Having the highest average elevation in the United States, combined with complex topography, results in dramatic climate changes from place to place. A general rule of thumb is the higher the elevation, the lower the temperature with an increase in precipitation. Northwest Colorado has a distinct four-season climate with cold, snowy winters and mild summers. In years when snow cover is heavy at high elevations, or when there is a sudden warming in the spring at high elevations, flooding may be a problem. Thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer. Hail is common in the northwest part of the state. Autumn means crisp, dry days with lots of sunshine and cool nights. Spring and autumn weather can change rapidly.
