Dolores
sits in the heart of Mesa Verde County in the southwestern part of the state, about halfway between Durango and Telluride. The town is only twenty minutes from Mesa Verde National Park and is situated right where the Dolores River forms the McPhee Reservoir, which is the second largest body of water in Colorado. The town of Dolores is also along the San Juan Skyway, a state and federally designated scenic highway, that is called "America's Most Beautiful Drive." The 236-mile loop on the Skyway will take you over the spectacular San Juan Mountains and through the historic mining towns of Telluride, Ouray, Silverton and Durango. With close proximity to the mountains and the Dolores River running right through town, Dolores is filled with outdoor recreational opportunities. Just a few of the things to do include boating, fly fishing, water skiing, hiking and camping, and also exploring the thousands of miles of backroads and national forest filled with Rocky Mountain Elk and Mule Deer. Gambling is also available just a half-hour away at the Ute Mountain Casino (poker, slots, blackjack and bingo.) The town of Dolores celebrates its heritage each August with Escalante Days, an all day festival that offers arts and crafts, a parade, raft races and other special events.

Dolores Weather & Climate

The extreme southwest corner of the state has a moderate, four-season climate. Weather variations occur depending on elevation. The area ranges from 14,000 foot mountain peaks to desert valley floors with alpine forests of ponderosa pines, juniper trees and aspen groves. Most of the region enjoys mild temperatures and 300 days of sunshine year-round. The region averages 71 inches of snow, but accumulations don't last long. Spring gradually warms up and showers are common. Summer temperatures seldom climb above the upper 80's and humidity levels are comfortable. Occasionally, flooding is a problem with the rivers and reservoirs being fed by melting snow in the mountains. Autumn is dry and cool, creating wonderful fall colors.
