Vallecito-Lake
is a picturesque four-season recreational lake located about 25 miles northeast of Durango. The lake is sheltered in a mountain valley 8,000 feet above sea level, surrounded by the San Juan National Forest near the Weminuche Wilderness area. It is one of the largest and most beautiful bodies of water in the state of Colorado. The Vallecito Lake area is filled with cabins and resorts, hotels and motels, RV parks, campgrounds, dude and guest ranches. Fishing is superb in Vallecito Lake for Rainbow Trout, German Brown and Cutthroat Trout, Northern Pike and Kokanee Salmon. You can enjoy a relaxing pontoon boat ride on the lake, or go sailing, canoeing or kayaking. Two full service marinas are located on Vallecito Lake. The area provides miles of cross-country skiing and snowmobiling trails, and the Purgatory Ski Resort is just a short drive north of Durango. Other things to do include mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, scenic glider rides, jeep tours and so much more. Due to its' location near the Four Corners, Vallecito Lake is just a short drive to many major attractions, such as the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Mesa Verde National Park, the San Juan Skyway, natural hot springs pools and many Old West gold mining towns. The nearby town of Bayfield offers shopping and dining choices, and historic Durango has museums, art galleries and award winning restaurants and cafes.

Vallecito Lake Weather & Climate

Southwest Colorado has a four-season alpine climate. This region is on the Western Slope of the Continental Divide at 7,200 feet above sea level. The combination of high desert plateau and Rocky Mountains to the north and east create an unusually mild climate. Temperatures here are much cooler in the summer than most of the surrounding southwestern United States. The area is also blessed with 300 days of sunshine per year. The climate of Colorado, in general, is difficult to describe because it varies so widely from place to place. The climate of any particular place in this region is profoundly affected by differences in elevation, and to a lesser degree, by the orientation of mountain ranges and valleys and wind direction. Wide variations occur within short distances.
