Mesa-Verde
National Park is part of the Southwest's "Grand Circle," and is located approximately one hour from Durango in southwest Colorado. This magnificent park contains the largest and most important archaeological preserve of Native American culture in the U.S.A. Mesa Verde, Spanish for "green table," offers an unparalleled look at more than 700 years of history. From approximately AD 600 through AD 1300 people lived and flourished in communities throughout the area, eventually building elaborate stone villages in the sheltered alcoves of the canyon walls. Today, these sheltered villages are called cliff dwellings. The cliff dwellings represent the last 75 to 100 years of occupation at Mesa Verde. In the late 1200s, within the span of one or two generations, they left their homes and moved away. Mesa Verde National Park is open 365 days a year. The Spruce Tree House restaurant & shops are open all year. The Visitors Center closes in late October and is moved to the Chapin Museum during the winter. The Lodge and Campground are open from mid-April to late October. Admission to the park is $5 per vehicle or $2 per individual. Other things to see and do in the area include the Durango-Silverton Steam Locomotive, skiing at Hesperus, Purgatory and Telluride, the San Juan Skyway, the Ute Mountain Casino at Towaoc, the Ute Mountain Tribal Park, Durango Mountain Resort and much more.

Mesa Verde Weather & Climate

The extreme southwest corner of the state has a moderate, four-season climate. Weather variations occur depending on elevation. The area ranges from 14,000 foot mountain peaks to desert valley floors with alpine forests of ponderosa pines, juniper trees and aspen groves. Most of the region enjoys mild temperatures and 300 days of sunshine year-round. The region averages 71 inches of snow, but accumulations don't last long. Spring gradually warms up and showers are common. Summer temperatures seldom climb above the upper 80's and humidity levels are comfortable. Occasionally, flooding is a problem with the rivers and reservoirs being fed by melting snow in the mountains. Autumn is dry and cool, creating wonderful fall colors.

The closest airports in the area are the Cortez Municipal airport (CEZ) located about 10 miles northwest of Mesa Verde in Cortez, Colorado, the Four Corners Regional airport (FMN) located approximately 37 miles south of Mesa Verde in Farmington, New Mexico, the Durango La Plata County airport (DRO) located roughly 38 miles east of Mesa Verde in Durango, Colorado, and finally the Telluride Regional airport (TEX) located around 57 miles northeast of Mesa Verde in Telluride, Colorado.
