Rico is a colorful little town set at the foot of Expectation Mountain in Colorado's San Juan Mountains in Dolores County. The population is around 200 (up to 500 in summertime,) a town for those who love the laid-back, small-town way of life more than crowded, busy resorts. The area was first discovered by trappers who worked the valley in the early 1800s for beaver and other fur-bearing animals, and later gold was discovered in 1866 - which explains the name "Rico," a Spanish word for "rich." Several historic buildings remain in town and a historic walking tour booklet and map is available for visitors. Rico offers a few shops, including The Rico Country Store, and two restaurants, The Argentine Bar & Grill and the Enterprise Bar & Grill (the latter was featured in National Geographic Magazine a few years ago.) The Rico Theater and Café was restored in 1996 and offers big name entertainment, such as The Dixie Chicks, Burning Spear and Leftover Salmon, which draws visitors from all around the area. One of the biggest attractions in Rico, however, is Mother Nature. Abundant outdoor activities are available, including mountain biking, backpacking, fishing, mountain climbing, jeep tours to Durango or Silverton, cross country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing. Rico is prime territory for elk and deer hunting and hiking. Surrounded by stunning 12,000-foot peaks, Rico makes the perfect base for day hikes and backpacking excursions, offering trails ranging from easy to difficult.

Rico Weather & Climate

Southwest Colorado has a four-season alpine climate. This region is on the Western Slope of the Continental Divide at 7,200 feet above sea level. The combination of high desert plateau and Rocky Mountains to the north and east create an unusually mild climate. Temperatures here are much cooler in the summer than most of the surrounding southwestern United States. The area is also blessed with 300 days of sunshine per year. The climate of Colorado, in general, is difficult to describe because it varies so widely from place to place. The climate of any particular place in this region is profoundly affected by differences in elevation, and to a lesser degree, by the orientation of mountain ranges and valleys and wind direction. Wide variations occur within short distances.
