Aspen
is located in the west central part of the state, about 40 miles southeast of Glenwood Springs. During the winter months, the city can be accessed only on Highway 82. During the summer, it can also be accessed from the east over scenic Independence Pass on Highway 82. Known throughout the world as one of Colorado's favorite ski resorts, Aspen is also full of activities year round. It sits at the upper end of the Roaring Fork Valley, with the Roaring Fork River (which is a superb trout fishing stream) running through the town. Aspen Mountain towers over the city and is one of four ski areas in the area, with Snowmass, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk all within 12 miles of town. Some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the world can be found here, along with snowmobiling, snowshoeing and snow camping. Most of the land surrounding the town belongs to the White River National Forest. The high mountain areas surrounding Aspen lie within the Maroon Bells-Snowmass, Hunter-Fryingpan and Collegiate Peaks Wilderness areas. Other activities besides skiing include trout fishing, backpacking, mountain climbing, whitewater rafting and kayaking. The nightlife in Aspen is legendary, the restaurants range from five star to casual pubs and the shopping is sophisticated and extensive. It's also a historically significant area where the nearby preserved ghost towns of Ashcroft and Independence give visitors a glimpse into the region's rich mining history. In September, the "Fall in Love with Aspen/Snowmass" is a nine-day celebration that includes an Oktoberfest, the Snowmass Village Balloon Festival and a Wine and Food Festival.

Aspen Weather & Climate

Central Colorado has a more complex climate than most states in the United States. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather depending on the topography of the area. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild to warm, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
