Black-Hawk is located west of Denver in Clear Creek Canyon. The twin towns of Black Hawk and Central City are so close, it's hard to tell where one begins and the other ends, and both are known for their limited-stakes gambling. In fact, Black Hawk, though small in size, has more casinos than Atlantic City. Also called "The City of Mills," Black Hawk is one of Colorado's oldest cities. It's one of a number of towns that grew in the narrow ravine called "Gregory's Gulch," after prospector John H. Gregory first discovered gold here in 1859. In it's heyday, the town of Black Hawk boasted gaming halls, saloons and brothels, while Central City was known for its' culture and opera houses. The Central City Opera House still holds performances today, including a summer opera festival. Both Black Hawk and Central City struggled to keep from becoming ghost towns, but the casinos have revived the towns, giving them new life. In Black Hawk, many of the historic buildings have been restored following the opening of the first casino in 1991. The casinos are mostly located down the ravine from the historic town site, lining the side of State Highway 119. Busloads of visitors come to gamble in Black Hawk from nearby Denver on a regular basis. There are also several hotels and bed and breakfast inns located in the town.

Black Hawk Weather & Climate

North-central Colorado has a semi-arid, continental climate with over 300 days of sunshine per year. It's a common misconception that due to its close proximity to the mountains and world-class skiing, that north-central Colorado has harsh winters. This is not entirely true. While there may be occasional bitter temperatures, storms do not last long. Periods of snow alternate with mild periods. The snow quickly melts with the mild daytime winter temperatures. The hottest months are July and August with an average high temperature of 74 degrees. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of 30 degrees. This region has four distinct seasons, and being along the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains means weather patterns are subject to rapid, volatile, yet brief changes.
