Divide
is located on the north slope of "America's Mountain," Pikes Peak, about 25 miles west of Colorado Springs. As part of beautiful Teller County, which is made up of mostly public lands belonging to the Pike National Forest, Mueller State Park and the Florissant Fossil Beds, this small town of 4,000 has much to offer visitors. The town of Divide sits at the top of Ute Pass at 9,165 feet above sea level right in the middle of the state (and is known affectionately by locals as "the center of the known universe.") Originally called "Hayden's Divide," the settlers of the late 1800s shortened it to "Divide" because major water run-offs divided to the north, south, east and west at this point. Today the major industry in Divide is tourism. The town serves as the gateway to Mueller State Park and the Cripple Creek/Victor Mining District - an area known for its' limited stakes gambling casinos. Just a few of the outdoor recreational activities available in Divide include fishing, cross country skiing, mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding. An 18-hole golf course is located just north of Woodland Park and alpine skiing is an easy two-hour drive away at the Breckenridge, Keystone and Monarch Ski Areas. Other attractions near Divide include the Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak Highway, Pikes Peak Cog Railway and the Cave of the Winds.

Divide Weather & Climate

Central Colorado has a more complex climate than most states in the United States. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
