New-Castle
is a quaint little town nestled in the mountains of northwestern Colorado. It's a Home Rule Municipality of Garfield County, with a population of around 2,000. Set amid thousands of acres of public land, mountain scenery and abundant wildlife makes New Castle an outdoor lover's dream. You can fish Elk Creek or on the Colorado River, hike one of the numerous nearby trails, take a scenic drive to the Flat Tops Wilderness, enjoy golf, horseback riding, or mountain biking. Flat Tops, especially, is a gorgeous place to visit near New Castle. It's a massive rock with a "flat" surface, with only occasional peaks that rise above the high plateau. Over 110 lakes and ponds are found below the flat-topped cliffs, many filled with trout for fishing. It's also a great area for hiking and horseback riding, with 160 miles of trails crisscrossing the area. Unfortunately, few of the access roads are plowed in the wintertime, so it's not the ideal place for cross-country skiing. The elevation in the area ranges from 7,600 to 12,994 feet. New Castle is also home to the Burning Mountain Festival, usually held in early September. A tradition for over 40 years, the Burning Mountain Festival is named for the mine fire that has been burning in the surrounding hills since 1899.

New Castle Weather & Climate

Northwestern Colorado is mostly mountainous, with some desert lands. Generally, the climate can be described as highland or alpine mountain. Dramatic climate changes can occur from place to place. A general rule of thumb is the higher the elevation, the lower the temperature with an increase in precipitation. Northwest Colorado has a distinct four-season climate with cold, snowy winters and mild summers. In years when snow cover is heavy, or when there is a sudden warming in the spring at high elevations, flooding may be a problem. Thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer. Hail is common in the northwest part of the state. Autumn means crisp, dry days with lots of sunshine and cool nights. Spring and autumn weather can change rapidly.
