Rifle
is a city located in Garfield County on the Colorado River in northwestern Colorado. The beautiful Roan Cliffs tower over the city to the west. As of the 2010 census, the population of Rifle was 9,172. Founded in 1882, the city of Rifle has long been a center of the cattle ranching industry in the region. The town is well-known for Rifle Mountain Park located 12 miles north of the town. To reach Rifle Park, take State Highway 13 (Railroad Avenue) north through the town of Rifle. Take a right on County Road 325 and this will lead you toward Rifle Creek Golf Course and Rifle Gap. Drive over the dam at Rifle Gap and continue on CR 325 until you reach the Rifle Fish Hatchery. The road will change to gravel after the fish hatchery, and the entrance to the park starts about 2000 feet after the road turns to gravel. Rifle Mountain Park is very popular with rock climbers. Visitors from all over the world come to climb over 250 bolted climbing routes. Most of the routes are for advanced climbers, although beginners will also find places to also have fun. The rock climbing season from mid-April through October. Rifle Park also offers hiking trails, camping, picnicking facilities and a community house. The area surrounding Rifle is gorgeous, and the Roan Cliffs, Grand Mesa and Flat Top Mountains all offer plenty of hiking and biking trails while enjoying stunning mountain views. In the wintertime, skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and ice climbing are all available.

Northwestern Colorado is mostly mountainous, with some desert lands. Generally, the climate can be described as highland or alpine mountain. Dramatic climate changes can occur from place to place. A general rule of thumb is the higher the elevation, the lower the temperature with an increase in precipitation. Northwest Colorado has a distinct four-season climate with cold, snowy winters and mild summers. In years when snow cover is heavy, or when there is a sudden warming in the spring at high elevations, flooding may be a problem. Thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer. Hail is common in the northwest part of the state. Autumn means crisp, dry days with lots of sunshine and cool nights. Spring and autumn weather can change rapidly.
