Columbine-Lake
is a 40-acre, natural mountain lake that is the site of a private residential community. It's located one mile northwest of Grand Lake, near Rocky Mountain National Park in north-central Colorado. Columbine Lake sits below Mount Neva about two hours west of Denver. Imagine this: a gorgeous deep-blue lake lined with stately pines and attractive, rustic homes and A-frame cottages, while mountains rise in the distance - this is the Columbine Lake. It's a shallow lake that's good for catching rainbow and cutthroat trout, and most of the lakeshore is accessible for fishing. Other activities include hiking, swimming, boating, kayaking, canoeing and picnicking. Camping is permitted at Columbine Lake, but no campfires are allowed. One must obtain a permit for the Columbine Travel Zone for camping. In the wintertime, snowmobiling is available on trails that go directly into town or into the Arapaho National Forest. Columbine Lake also offers a community pool and spa, an 18-hole golf course, picnic and playground areas around the lake. Some of the homes at the lake border National Park Land or Recreation District Land. Elk and moose are just some of the wildlife frequently seen in the area. To reach the lake, take Highway 40 south from Granby to Tabernash. Turn north on County Road 84 and Forest Road 129, and go about 12 miles to the Junco Lake Trailhead. Hike about 1.8 miles on the Caribou Pass Trail to the Columbine Lake Trail. The lake is at the end of the Columbine Lake Trail.

Columbine Lake Weather & Climate

Central Colorado has a more complex climate than most states in the United States. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
