Florissant
is a small, unincorporated community located in Teller County, Colorado, approximately 38 miles west of Colorado Springs. It sits at the intersection of State Highway 1 and County Road 1. The community of Florissant continues to grow and is home to a post office, a new library with multimedia opportunities, a Heritage Museum and the Florissant Community Park. It is most well known, however, for the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, where over 80,000 fossil specimens have been extracted from the Florissant lake bed. This is one of the richest and most diverse fossil deposits in the world, where petrified redwood stumps up to 14 feet wide and thousands of detailed fossils of insects and plants are revealed to tell the story of prehistoric Colorado. Ranger-guided walks of the park are given and it is open 7 days a week, except for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day. Florissant is also known for the Hayman fire in 2006, which is the largest fire in the history of Colorado. Florissant has several subdivisions, including Colorado Mountain Estates, Florissant Heights, Indian Creek, Wilson Lakes and Valley Hi.

In the geographic center of Colorado, the weather ranges from semi-arid to alpine mountain climate. The Rocky Mountains, for which the state is so famous, profoundly affects the climate of the region, with dramatic differences over short distances. Elevations range from 7,000 to 14,000 feet at the highest peaks. July daytime temperatures are in the 70s and 80s in the valleys but 50s and 60s higher in the mountains. Winters are very cold and high winds are commonplace on the mountain peaks. Thunderstorms are common in this area nearly every afternoon in the summertime. Snow and soft hail are another possibility anytime of the year. Heavy snows in the high mountains are common and avalanches pose a threat. Visitors should use caution when traveling to this region and bring warm clothing, no matter what time of year.
