Elevenmile-Canyon-Reservoir
is a Colorado State Park, located in Park County in the exact center of the state. Completed in 1932, the reservoir stands 135 feet above the South Platte riverbed, about 11 miles south of Lake George. Elevenmile Canyon Reservoir is one of the largest bodies of water east of the Continental Divide. It has a surface area of 3,405 acres and 23.9 miles of shoreline. The surrounding park is 7,662-acres in size. The reservoir is well-known for its' outstanding fishing for rainbow and brown trout, cutthroat, kokanee and northern pike. There are five miles of scenic hiking and biking trails around the lake and over 300 campsites. You can chose to camp near the shoreline, or nestled in a secluded canyon on a remote hillside. Other things to do at Elevenmile Canyon Reservoir include picnicking, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, and ice boating. Swimming, scuba diving and water-skiing are not allowed on the reservoir. There are three boat ramps located at the North Shore campground, Witcher Cove campground and Little Cove. Several islands are located in Elevenmile Canyon Reservoir, but all are closed to public use. Wildlife viewing is popular in the park, and many species of birds reside in or migrate through the park, making it popular for bird watching. The reservoir is closed to night boating from a half-hour after sunset to a half-hour before sunrise. Elevenmile's central location makes it ideal as a base for exploring many of Colorado's nearby attractions.

Elevenmile Canyon Reservoir Weather & Climate

In the geographic center of Colorado, the weather ranges from semi-arid to alpine mountain climate. The Rocky Mountains, for which the state is so famous, profoundly affects the climate of the region, with dramatic differences over short distances. Elevations range from 7,000 to 14,000 feet at the highest peaks. July daytime temperatures are in the 70s and 80s in the valleys but 50s and 60s higher in the mountains. Winters are very cold and high winds are commonplace on the mountain peaks. Thunderstorms are common in this area nearly every afternoon in the summertime. Snow and soft hail are another possibility anytime of the year. Heavy snows in the high mountains are common and avalanches pose a threat. Visitors should use caution when traveling to this region and bring warm clothing, no matter what time of year.
