Crested-Butte
is located at the north end of the Gunnison Valley in the Elk Mountains, about four hours from Denver. Called "The Last Great Colorado Ski Town," Crested Butte is a rustic Old West town with a Victorian ambiance that also reflects the turn-of-the-century mining life for which the town was once known. The downtown business district is a designated National Historic District. Every season offers something different in Crested Butte. In winter, you'll find some of the finest skiing and snowboarding in the country, along with snowmobiling, ice fishing, cross country skiing and dog sledding. The melting snows in spring bring a spectacular display of wildflowers to the mountains, and warmer temperatures offer a myriad of recreational opportunities. Enjoy mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding, kayaking, paragliding, golf and even hot air balloon rides. Crested Butte's historic downtown and the nearby Mt. Crested Butte slopeside shops offer novelties and souvenirs, stylish boutiques, antique shops and locally made homemade foods. Speaking of food, the restaurants in Crested Butte have an international flare - from a local award winning brewpub to five star establishments. The two towns of Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte feature altogether over 35 different restaurants and 26 bars - with Italian, French, Mexican, Asian and American cuisine. The town of Crested Butte also hosts an annual Wildflower Festival, a "week-long botanical celebration held every July."

Crested Butte Weather & Climate

Central Colorado has a very complex climate. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather patterns. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild to warm, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
