Gunnison
is an Old West Victorian town located in southwest Colorado in the beautiful Gunnison Valley, about four hours from Denver. This laid back town is off the beaten path from other congested ski areas, yet offers many of the same amenities and incredible outdoor recreational opportunities. The town is surrounded by the Gunnison National Forest and The Blue Mesa, Colorado's largest lake, is located in Gunnison's Curecanti National Recreation Area and boasts 96 miles of shoreline for boating, fishing and water skiing. The Crested Butte Mountain Ski Resort is just 30 minutes north of Gunnison and boasts a diverse mix of terrain that is a favorite with many skiers. Other wintertime activities include ice fishing, snowmobiling, ice-skating and cross-country skiing. The Gunnison River Territory, which is the size of the whole state of Connecticut, is a summer paradise with trails and historic mining roads open for hiking, mountain biking, and four wheeling or horseback riding. Water enthusiasts enjoy rafting, kayaking and canoeing. There are also two golf courses located in Gunnison. Other places to visit include The Black Canyon in Gunnison National Park, which is often called "Colorado's Grand Canyon," and many old mining towns are in the area, perfect for an afternoon of exploration. Gunnison hosts the annual Cattleman's Days, the oldest rodeo in the West, as well as many cultural events, summer concerts and art festivals throughout the year.

Gunnison Weather & Climate

Central Colorado has a very complex climate. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather patterns. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild to warm, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
