Almont
is a small community located in the west-central area of the state. The village lies between the city of Gunnison and Crested Butte where the Taylor and East Rivers meet to form the Gunnison River. Almont began as a mining and railroading town, and some of the rustic old miners' cabins can still be seen in the area. Over the years, the tranquil area became popular for fishing and river rafting. Businesses opened in Almont to cater to the tourists. Other activities in the area include canoeing, kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and four-wheel driving. In the wintertime, Almont offers cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. The community of Almont is surrounded by almost two million acres of pristine wilderness. The scenery is outstanding and photographic opportunities abound. The area around Almont is known as the Gunnison-Crested Butte region. In addition to the year-round outdoor activities, the region is full of unique shops, restaurants, spas, lodging options such as rustic inns, cabins, bed and breakfasts and five star resorts.

Central Colorado has a very complex climate. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather patterns. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild to warm, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
