Buena-Vista
is nestled at the foot of the spectacular Rocky Mountain Collegiate Peaks in central Colorado. It's a "crossroads" town of sorts, with Leadville to the north, Salida to the south, Aspen to the west and Colorado Springs to the east. The town of Buena Vista is known by many as "the capital of whitewater rafting in the United States," with the Arkansas River running right through the town. The river is the starting point for many rafting companies, and it's the focal point of the beautiful City Park, which is particularly stunning in the fall when the cottonwoods turn golden. Buena Vista is also a popular area for snowmobiling and cross country skiing, mountain biking, back packing and wildlife viewing. The historic district of town is lined with quaint shops and restaurants, and many special events are held all year long, including the Collegiate Peaks Music Festival in August. Just outside of town are the towering 14,000 foot peaks of the Collegiates, a favorite spot of photographers, and nearby is the Mount Princeton Hot Springs, a natural hot pool set alongside the cold waters of Chalk Creek.

Buena Vista Weather & Climate

Central Colorado has a more complex climate than most states in the United States. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather depending on the topography of the area. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild to warm, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
