Salida
is located in Chaffee County on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains in central Colorado. Chaffee County is bordered on the west by the Sawatch Range, including the 14,000-foot Continental Divide and on the east by the Mosquito Range, which descends toward the south. The beautiful Arkansas River flows toward the southeast, between the two mountain ranges. This area has more 14,000-foot mountain peaks than any other in the state, and is often referred to as the "Fourteener Region." The town of Salida is the crossroads for three interstate highways, U.S. 24, 50 and 285, and it is approximately 130 miles to Denver and 100 miles from Colorado Springs. Called the "sweetly unpretentious town of Salida," by Outside Magazine in 2004, it was named one of the magazine's "20 Dream Towns and Adventure Hideouts (& Sweet Land Deals.)" Attractions in town include a number of art galleries and unique shops and a historical museum. Salida is also home to Colorado's largest indoor hot springs pool, a year-round facility that offers aquatic recreation and relaxation in natural, hot mineral waters. Other recreational activities include skiing at the nearby Monarch Mountain ski area, hiking, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, fly-fishing, golf and much more.

Central Colorado has a more complex climate than most states in the United States. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather depending on the topography of the area. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild to warm, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
