Westcliffe is a historic western town located between Pueblo and Salida and an hour and a half southwest of Colorado Springs. Situated at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Westcliffe is in Custer County, which is a very rural part of southern Colorado. It is said that Westcliffe has "a larger population of cattle than people," - the actual human population of the town is around 700 residents. Westcliffe's economy is based in agriculture and the town boasts the best high-mountain hay available anywhere in the country. To give you an idea of the type of low-key, sparsely populated place this is - there are no stoplights anywhere in the county and no major highways run through the area (but this only adds to the charm of Westcliffe.) The town does offer a golf course and movie theater, great restaurants, pubs and live entertainment, art galleries and various other shops and services. The area is ideal for horseback riding and several expert outfitters in the valley will guide overnight pack trips into the mountains. Many mountain lakes, streams and rivers provide outstanding fishing, and there are miles and miles of hiking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling trails in the area. The nearby Arkansas River offers some of the best whitewater rafting in the country, and Westcliffe is about an hour's drive south of Salida, home of Colorado's largest indoor natural hot springs. The major ski areas of Monarch, Crested Butte and Breckenridge are all within easy driving distance of the town of Westcliffe.

Westcliffe Weather & Climate

South-central is a complex mix of mountains and desert. Since Colorado is a mid-latitude interior continental state, and has the highest elevations in the United States, weather can change dramatically from place to place. The state has one of the most complex climates in the nation. Southern Colorado is not always warmer than the northern part of the state, due to the elevation. Generally, the mountainous areas are cooler and wetter than lower elevations. Winters are cold and snowy, and summers are warm with temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Nights anytime of the year can be crisp in Colorado. Humidity is usually not a problem. Southern Colorado receives 300 days of sunshine per year. So, although there is plenty of snow in the wintertime, except at the highest elevations, it usually melts by mid-day.
