Crestone is a small town nestled at the base of Kit Carson Mountain on the east edge of the San Luis Valley, about 50 miles northeast of Alamosa on Highway 17. The town's population is less than 100, but there are approximately 1,000 permanent residents in the surrounding area. Crestone is most well known for its' many spiritual centers and retreats. This picturesque small town began as a mining town and has now become a spiritual Mecca for world religions. It accommodates a Hindu temple, a Zen Center, a coed Carmelite monastery and several Tibetan centers. The town also offers a few restaurants and stores, a coffee shop, art galleries and an organic food store, and since quite a few bodywork specialists live in town, it's a great place to get a massage. The nearby 14,000-foot Crestone Peak and Crestone Needle are two of the most beautiful mountains in Colorado. Outdoor recreation in the area includes hiking, horseback riding, golf, fishing, bird and wildlife watching. The town is host to the Annual Crestone Music Festival, a multi-genre, multi-cultural event that features local, regional, national and international performers along with international cuisine, arts and activities for both adults and children.

Crestone Weather & Climate

South-central is a complex mix of mountains and desert. Since Colorado is a mid-latitude interior continental state, and has the highest elevations in the United States, weather can change dramatically from place to place. The state has one of the most complex climates in the nation. Southern Colorado is not always warmer than the northern part of the state, due to the elevation. Generally, the mountainous areas are cooler and wetter than lower elevations. Winters are cold and snowy, and summers are warm with temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Nights anytime of the year can be crisp in Colorado. Humidity is usually not a problem. Southern Colorado receives 300 days of sunshine per year. So, although there is plenty of snow in the wintertime, except at the highest elevations, it usually melts by mid-day.
