Ridgway
is a small town called "the Gateway to the San Juan Mountains," located near Ouray and Telluride at the junction of Highways 550 and 62 in southwest Colorado. It is approximately 25 minutes off Highway 50. Situated along the San Juan Skyway, one of the most famous scenic byways in the country, Ridgway offers spectacular views in every direction. The birthplace and headquarters of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad, Ridgway is now home to the Ridgway Railroad Museum. The Orvis Hot Springs is located one mile south of Ridgway on Highway 50, and is a sacred hot springs of the Ute Indians that today offers several pools, one that is "swimsuit optional." The Ridgway Farmers' Market has gained statewide recognition (open Sundays 8:00 am - Noon, May through October,) and the Ridgway State Park and Reservoir offers swimming, boating and camping. Ridgway's convenient location puts you in the heart of several fascinating attractions, including the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The San Juan Skyway is a 236-mile scenic loop, surrounded by 14,000 foot mountain peaks that takes you to the 19th century mining towns of Ouray, Silverton, Telluride and Rico, and the agricultural communities of Dolores, Cortez, Mancos and Durango. The section of highway from Ouray to Silverton is called "The Million Dollar Highway." Other attractions that are an easy day trip from Ridgway include Unaweep Canyon/Tabeguache Plateau, Trail of the Ancients - Mesa Verde, Black Canyon, and Owl Creek Pass.

Ridgway Weather & Climate

Southwest Colorado has a four-season alpine climate. This region is on the Western Slope of the Continental Divide at 7,200 feet above sea level. The combination of high desert plateau and Rocky Mountains to the north and east create an unusually mild climate. Temperatures here are much cooler in the summer than most of the surrounding southwestern United States. The area is also blessed with 300 days of sunshine per year. The climate of Colorado, in general, is difficult to describe because it varies so widely from place to place. The climate of any particular place in this region is profoundly affected by differences in elevation, and to a lesser degree, by the orientation of mountain ranges and valleys and wind direction. Wide variations occur within short distances.
