South-Fork
is a town located at the junction of the Rio Grande River and its' "south fork." The famous Silver Thread National Scenic Byway begins in the center of South Fork, where Highway 160 and 149 meet. This historic route carries you on a 75-mile journey between the towns of South Fork and Lake City, and includes the historic town of Creede. Along the way, you will travel through the Gunnison and the Rio Grande National Forests and you see parts of the La Garita, Weminuche and Powderhorn Wilderness Areas. There are very few towns along the byway, but the colorful old mining camps of the Silver Thread area offer history, scenic beauty, and authenticity. On average it takes around two hours to reach Lake City from South Fork. Biking and hiking are also popular in South Fork, where you'll find many well maintained and scenic trails. When hiking, it is advisable to remember the altitude (over 8,000 feet,) and that weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains. There are several areas of the Rio Grande River that are designated as Gold Medal Waters, where you'll find rainbow and brown trout. Other recreational activities in the area include rafting, horseback riding, four-wheeling, cross country skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing. Each year, South Fork hosts a Logging Competition & Craft Festival, usually held in July.

South Fork Weather & Climate

Southwest Colorado has a four-season alpine climate. This region is on the Western Slope of the Continental Divide at 7,200 feet above sea level. The combination of high desert plateau and Rocky Mountains to the north and east create an unusually mild climate. Temperatures here are much cooler in the summer than most of the surrounding southwestern United States. The area is also blessed with 300 days of sunshine per year. The climate of Colorado, in general, is difficult to describe because it varies so widely from place to place. The climate of any particular place in this region is profoundly affected by differences in elevation, and to a lesser degree, by the orientation of mountain ranges and valleys and wind direction. Wide variations occur within short distances.

The closest airports in the area are Stevens Field (2V1) located about 35 miles southwest of South Fork in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, San Luis Valley Regional Bergman Field (ALS) located approximately 45 miles southeast of South Fork in Alamosa, Colorado, the Gunnison Crested Butte Regional airport (GUC) located roughly 61 miles north of South Fork in Gunnison, Colorado, and finally the Durango La Plata County airport (DRO) located around 70 miles west of South Fork in Durango, Colorado.
