Monte-Vista is a town located in the heart of the San Luis Valley in Rio Grande County, southern Colorado. The population is approximately 4,500, making it the most populous town in the county. Monte Vista is Spanish for "mountain view;" an apt name for a town with spectacular mountain views no matter where you look. The San Luis Valley is the world's largest alpine valley, located atop the Rio Grande Rift in the San Juan Mountains. It covers approximately 8,000 square miles, is 122 miles long and 74 miles wide. The average altitude is 7,500 feet. In addition to Monte Vista, some of the other towns located in San Luis Valley are Alamosa, Del Norte, Fort Garland, San Luis, Crestone, and San Acacio. One of the most famous features of the valley is the Great Sand Dunes, which is a National Park and Preserve. Several archeological sites are located within the Great Sand Dunes. Another attraction near Monte Vista is the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. This historic, narrow-gauge railroad runs between Antonito, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico. Steam locomotives take tourists on a six-hour trip between the two towns, climbing over the 10,000-foot elevation Cumbres Pass. The Cumbres & Toltec is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Monte Vista is a great little town from which to explore all the attractions of the San Luis Valley.

Monte Vista Weather & Climate

South-central Colorado is a complex mix of mountains and desert. Since Colorado is a mid-latitude interior continental state, and has the highest elevations in the United States, weather can change dramatically from place to place. Generally, the mountainous areas of south-central Colorado are cooler and wetter than lower elevations. Winters are cold and snowy, and summers are warm with temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Nights anytime of the year can be crisp in Colorado. Humidity is usually not a problem. Southern Colorado receives 300 days of sunshine per year. There is plenty of snow in the wintertime, but, except at the highest elevations, it usually melts by mid-day.
