Palisade is a town in the west-central part of the state, known as "The Peach Capital of Colorado." As of the 2010 census, the population of Palisade was 2,692. The mild climate of the area (78 percent sunshine and a 182-day growing season,) has resulted in Palisade being known for its' peach orchards, vineyards and other fruits and vegetables. Peach, pear, apple, cherry and plum trees were planted in Palisade as early as the 1890s. The mild climate also means outdoor recreation is possible all year long. The town of Palisade borders the Bookcliffs and Grand Mesa National Forest, which offer hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, birding, scenic drives and camping. If you're looking to hit the slopes, the nearby Powderhorn Ski Resort is popular for both alpine skiing and snowboarding. This part of Colorado is also known for its' wineries. Palisade is home to two-thirds of the state's vineyard acreage, and more than one fourth of their wineries. The microclimate of sunny days, dry air and cool nights is ideal for producing plump grapes for the area wineries. Other attractions in Palisade include the annual Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival in June, and the Colorado Mountain Winefest in September. Not to be missed in the peach capital of Colorado, however, is the annual Peach Festival, held in August each year. With more than 100 vendors, live music, delicious food and plenty of outdoor activities, the Palisade Peach Festival has something for the whole family.

Palisade Weather & Climate

West-central Colorado, near the Utah border, has a high desert climate. It can be classified as either semi-arid to arid, depending on location. Winters are cold and dry, and snowfall is usually light and doesn't remain on the ground long. Due to its location west of the Rockies, this region doesn't receive as much influence from the Chinook winds as other parts of state. Spring comes slowly to west-central Colorado, but quickens near June. Summers are hot and dry, with at least five days per year with temperatures at or above 100 degrees F. This region receives little precipitation year-round, with no seasonal spike. Sunshine is abundant, with 300 days of sunshine per year. Autumn cools rapidly, and the first freeze usually happens in mid-October.
