Grand-Junction
is located in Mesa County along the north side of the Colorado River. The city sits near the mid-point of Grand Valley, which is a major fruit growing region and recently has become known for its wineries. It is the 15th most populous city in the state and the most populous city on the Colorado Western Slope. The Colorado National Monument, which is a series of canyons and mesas that are similar to the Grand Canyon, overlook the city and most of the area is surrounded by public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Interstate 70 connects Grand Junction eastward to Glenwood Springs and Denver. Colorado National Monument is known for its hiking among sandstone rock formations, arches and canyons that date back over 1.5 billion years. You can also enjoy the spectacular scenery with a drive along the serpentine 23-mile Rim Rock Road. Hiking also abounds in Grand Mesa, the 10,000-foot high "Island in the Sky." Grand Mesa is the largest flat-topped mountain in the world and offers incredible hiking trails that become cross-country and snowmobiling trails in the wintertime. Other things to do in the area include river rafting on the Colorado River, touring the 17 wineries that surround Grand Junction, mountain biking on the Kokopelli or Tabaguache Trails, or take a more leisurely ride on 18 miles of paved, scenic pathway along the Colorado River. Historic downtown Grand Junction is filled with unique shops and restaurants, art galleries and boutiques. It also offers "Art on the Corner," the first Main Street sidewalk sculpture exhibit in Colorado and the largest anywhere in the West.

West-central Colorado, near the Utah border, has a high desert climate. It can be classified as either semi-arid to arid, depending on location. Winters are cold and dry, and snowfall is usually light and doesn't remain on the ground long. Due to its location west of the Rockies, this region doesn't receive as much influence from the Chinook winds as other parts of state. Spring comes slowly to west-central Colorado, but quickens near June. Summers are hot and dry, with at least five days per year with temperatures at or above 100 degrees F. This region receives little precipitation year-round, with no seasonal spike. Sunshine is abundant, with 300 days of sunshine per year. Autumn cools rapidly, and the first freeze usually happens in mid-October.
